Summary: Flash fiction piece for Aywas Scavenger Hunt #199.

"How hard could it actually be?" mocked Luca, dropping underneath the lazy sweep of Tak's tail. The Quetzal wasn't even trying to hit him, but Luca felt certain that if he got smacked by that tail--well, bye bye Luca. "It won't be so bad, Luca. Why, it's not like he'll drag you off and experiment on you."

Luca felt himself grow ten years older when Tak murmured in his sleep and lazily swiped the air with his claws, missing him by the barest of inches. He swallowed hard, gripped the rope, and approached Tak's broad black and gold back. It was stupid. It was really stupid and he didn't even know why he was--well, okay, he did know. It had something to do with the wicked look in Damien's eyes and the way the other man leaned against a wall.

Sane people didn't try to ride Tak. Sane people would give Tak lots of room, daily offerings, and maybe one or two of their pretty daughters (or sons) just to make sure. Too bad Luca already determined that he wasn't so sane after all.

"In for a penny," he muttered, staring at the intricate patterns on Tak's fur, "In for a pound." A couple of feet away (he was shocked that Tak wasn't already awake and biting his head off), he took a deep breath, stared up at the sky (last thing he'll see, probably), and pounced.

Tak opened an eyes lazily. Luca felt his body freeze and, for the life of him, couldn't move a muscle. He had a leg thrown over Tak's side and he had a vague plan of looping the rope over Tak's neck (except wouldn't he be strangling the Quetzal by accident?) and wow, this was so not the moment to be thinking that perhaps one's plans were even more half baked than previously thought.

"This is a dream," he blurted.

Tak blinked.

"It is a silly, silly dream," Luca continued, desperate. He could almost feel the pain of those teeth chomping down on his stomach and splitting him in half.

Tak tilted an ear, seemed to give a philosophical shrug of his shoulder, and closed his eyes.

...Seriously? That worked?

Luca gave a soundless sigh of relief and wiped at his forehead with a hand. He contemplated the rope in his hands. Maybe it should go into Tak's mouth? Kind of like a bridle for a horse? Except, of course, Tak was no horse and would probably sever the rope with his teeth. Maybe something like a muzzle then? Luca frowned down at the rope. That would probably work.

Plan firmly in place, he looked up straight into Tak's bemused eyes. Eyes that were, obviously, wide awake.

"Oh shi--" Luca launched himself off Tak's back, leaving the rope dangling lamely. Tak twisted his head and slowly, deliberately, caught the rope between his teeth and cut it. Then, equally slowly and gravely, the Quetzal proceeded to lift the rope up and rend it into tiny pieces. He looked at Luca.

Luca flinched.

Tak turned away and went back to sleep.

Luca inched away, making sure not to show Tak his back. Then, when Tak disappeared from his view, he turned around and ran. There were some things people were not meant to do. Trying to go dragon riding on Tak? Definitely one of them.
