“I don’t like cherry blossoms,” Hikaru said, watching the soft pink petals swirl in the air. He sounded wistful, sad, as if he wasn’t really paying attention to what was going on, as if he was far away. “It reminds me of…” he trailed off, usually bright eyes quietly sad.
“Of what, Shindou?” It had been a casual question, tossed out when the other boy didn’t go on.
Hikaru darted him a look, closed his mouth, and shook his head. He stuck his hands in his pockets, forced casualness into his tone, “It’s not important.”
Touya looked as if he were going to ask, to press the other boy for answers for a moment. After all, if it wasn’t important then Hikaru would tell him, that he didn’t spoke volumes. But then he pushed away the urge to ask, to press, to force Hikaru to say what he was going to say.
Someday. Someday.
“I’m hungry!” Hikaru said decisively. He turned laughing eyes at Touya, the darkness having faded away, but not forgotten, “Let’s eat lunch and stop by your father’s go salon.”
“Not ramen!” Preemptive strike, quick and sudden.
“Not fair! I want ramen! Touyaaaa…”
“We go eat ramen three times a week! At least! Not again!”
Hikaru gave him a sly look, “If we go this time, I’ll let you pick next time.”
Touya glowered back, “You said that last time!”
“I mean it this time!”
He looked into Hikaru’s bright eyes, inwardly cringed at the scene they were making in the middle of the street, and relented, “Last time, Shindou. After this, no more ramen for a month.”
Hikaru looked comically aghast, mouth working though no words came out. Until he managed to sputter, “T-that’s impossible!” He turned his head to the side, snubbed his nose into the air, “Who said I had to go with you anyway, huh? I’ll make Waya go with me! Or Isumi!”
Touya just looked at him. Then he crossed his arms.
The other boy sighed, “Fine, fine.” He reached out casually, started to tug on Touya’s sleeve, “Come on. Ramen!”
A small smile formed on Touya’s face as he followed Hikaru, happy that the other boy seemed to snap out of whatever mood he had been in earlier. It was a side of Hikaru that only he got to see, but that didn’t mean that he liked seeing it. He started to mentally counting down. 3… 2… 1…
“How about a week? No ramen for a week?”
“Two weeks, Shindou.”
“Damn it, Touya…”
